SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University, established in 1860, is Brooklyn’s only academic medical center, serving 2.6 million residents. It includes the College of Medicine, College of Nursing, School of Health Professions, School of Graduate Studies, and School of Public Health. In April 2024, New York allocated $300 million in capital funding and $100 million in operating support to expand its clinical services and address health disparities. SUNY Downstate enhances patient care through initiatives like the “We Care” program for safety and quality, the Collaborative Care Mental Health Initiative, and the “Keep Care Close” campaign promoting local healthcare access. It also provides free breast cancer screenings for uninsured and underinsured women. These programs reflect its commitment to improving health equity and outcomes in Brooklyn’s diverse communities.
