One of the biggest success stories in digital musculoskeletal (MSK) care, Hinge Health rode the employee benefits market to growth, finding a way to circumvent traditionally restrictive insurance adoption and reimbursement schemes. However, some national bodies have expressed concerns at digital health startups potentially using unlicensed professionals to perform "physical therapy", a potentially huge red flag. In 2022, Hinge Health signed a pledge with the American Physical Therapy Association (along with other prominent digital MSK providers) to promise that, no matter the delivery care system, physical therapy must involve an actual physical therapist. This is a strong signal and one that has led to continued popularity in the space from clinicians looking to enter the digital health ecosystem as potential employees for the tens of millions of lives now covered by Hinge Health.
