We are witnessing a silent pandemic of mental and behavioral health disorders among children and young people. Today, 1 in 5 children in the U.S. has a diagnosable mental health disorder, yet about half of those who need care never receive it from a behavioral health provider.
At Handspring, we’ve set out to rebuild this system from the ground up. According to Handspring Health, "1 in 5 children in the US have a diagnosable mental health disorder...[yet] systemic barriers have made it impossible for most families to find timely or high-quality mental healthcare." This is pretty alarming, and the space where Handspring Health is building, combining both virtual and in person care. On a broader scale, we've been noticing a trend of companies moving from "virtual care" to "virtual first care" - an important distinction as hybrid treatment flows combining both telehealth and in person care continue to mature. A few final statistics from Handspring that are worth sharing: "50% of all mental illness begins by age 14, with 75% starting by age 24, [and] untreated mental illness often worsens over time."
